Arctic Ski Expedition: Backcountry Ski & Sail — Tromsø to Lyngen Alps
A serious vessel and the finest ski terrain in Norway — this is ski and sail reimagined.
Seven days of backcountry skiing in the heart of Arctic Norway — and no two days look the same. The first half unfolds from downtown Tromsø: three days of vehicle-accessed ski touring through some of Norway’s most accessible yet spectacular terrain, with hosted dinners of local Arctic cuisine waiting each evening. Then the trip shifts entirely. You board our expedition vessel in the harbor and sail into the Lyngen Alps, where peaks rise straight from the fjords and runs end at sea level. For four nights the boat is your base camp — warm, well-crewed, and equipped with a sauna, hot tub, bar and private chef. The skiing gets more remote. The evenings get better with a chance to see the stunning Northern Lights.
Trip Highlights

Is This Trip For Me?
You should be in very good shape and confident skiing steep and varied terrain and snow conditions, including powder, corn and hard pack. Participants must ski ungroomed black diamond runs without hesitation and have strong ski touring or splitboarding experience, including efficient transitions, skinning steep terrain, and executing kick turns. You should be comfortable climbing 800-1200 meters (2,600-3,900 feet) per day, with the ability to handle up to 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) on bigger days. Snowboarders should maintain speed on flats, hold a solid traverse line, and maneuver smoothly to keep the group moving, sometimes using ski poles for assistance. More on ability levels

FAQs:
- Tell me more about the boat and what makes this ski and sail trip different? Most ski and sail trips operate from small monohull sailboats — compact and functional, but limiting. One or two shared bathrooms, a small social area, and when the Arctic weather turns, nowhere comfortable to wait it out. Our vessel is built for a different experience - Featuring an onboard sauna, hot tub and bar. She accommodates 12 guests with multiple private bathrooms — a significant advantage over typical Norwegian charter vessels. A rough weather day at anchor becomes a rest day you actually enjoy — while other groups wander the harbor, your group is in the spa. The vessel also changes what's possible on the mountain. At 8–10 knots with serious anchoring capability, we can reach terrain smaller sailboats can't access efficiently — new valleys, quieter zones, better snow. With an on-board desalinator, this boat can also anchor in places that most boats avoid due to the risk of running out of fresh water on board. This is ski and sail reimagined: a full expedition platform, and one of the most comfortable base camps in the Arctic.
- What is the skiing and terrain like? Located at 69° North in Arctic Norway, the Lyngen Alps are one of the world's great ski destinations — a mountain range that offers a lifetime of objectives: steep couloirs, big open faces, glaciated summits, and descents that end at the edge of the fjord. Few places on earth combine terrain of this quality with scenery of this scale. The range is famous for its couloir skiing and big steep faces, rewarding both intermediate and advanced skiers with runs that feel genuinely remote and hard-earned. From the summits, the views across the ocean and fjords are unlike anything you'll find in the Alps or Rockies. This is ski mountaineering at its finest, in one of the most dramatic Arctic environments on the planet.
- What is a typical day like? This trip is built around finding the best snow at the right time and we have plenty of daylight to keep things flexible. Our guides focus on strategy — reading weather windows, timing conditions, and positioning the group to be in the right place when it comes together. That might mean an early alpine start or a late afternoon departure. Flexibility is part of what makes this trip work.
- Where are the other guests from and what is their backcountry experience? Guests join us from around the world, primarily North America and Europe. Expect a mix of advanced skiers and riders who are comfortable in powder, trees, and variable terrain, and prepared for ski touring and splitboarding as outlined in the “Is This Trip For Me” section.
- How do I get to Tromsø? Getting to and from Tromsø`s TOS airport is easy. There are daily flights from Oslo with SAS and Norwegian Airlines. Also, many airlines offer non-stop flights from European cities directly into Tromsø during the peak winter and spring season.
- Is there Wi-Fi? Yes, our Tromsø hotel offers reliable Wi-Fi so you can stay connected throughout the trip. There is also 4G and 5G networks while in town and when on the boat, although do expect some areas to have poor or spotty coverage.
- How much spending money should I bring? The local currency is the kroner (NOK). While most major expenses are covered, we recommend budgeting approximately $40-50 USD per day for lunches, snacks, and après-ski while we are based in Tromsø. Alcohol is available for purchase on the boat. Norway is essentially a cashless society, so be sure to notify your credit card provider about your travel plans.
- Do you recommend spending any time in Oslo before or after the tour? Yes. Oslo is a great city to explore for a few days featuring quality museums, ocean side saunas, restaurants, cafes and night life. It is safe and is a fantastic city to explore by foot.
