Seeking fewer crowds, abundant dry powder, and a more authentic Japanese ski experience? Welcome to Tohoku, a lesser-traveled region of northern Honshu. Built around a mobile, road-based approach, this trip moves between multiple ski zones to chase the best conditions each day. With just six guests and two professional guides on every departure, the experience is highly personalized and efficient—maximizing time on snow. By combining lift-assisted access with strategic touring, we focus on reaching deeper, less-tracked terrain. Evenings are spent unwinding in traditional onsens and enjoying locally inspired Japanese dinners, offering a deeper connection to the culture of rural Tohoku, Japan. Far from the crowds of Niseko and the busier resorts of Hokkaido and Nagano, this is a refined powder-chasing experience designed for skiers who value both exceptional snow and a more meaningful travel experience.

Tohoku Backcountry Trip Highlights

  • Two guides on every trip — led by a certified IFMGA/ACMG Ski Guide, supported by a fluent Japanese-speaking assistant guide who skis with the group, helps manage pacing and group flow on the mountain, and deeply enhances the overall cultural experience.
  • Explore up to 6 different ski areas loaded with dry Tohoku powder, including skiing amongst the “snow monster” trees of Mount Hakkoda
  • Noticeably less foreigners and crowds compared to other Japanese ski destinations
  • Deeply rooted Japanese culture, traditional locally sourced meals and muscle relaxing onsen spas at our comfortable accommodations

Is This Trip For Me?

powderquest

You should be in good shape and confident in deep powder, trees, varied terrain and comfortable descending ungroomed advanced runs without hesitation. Snowboarders should be able to maintain speed on flats and hold a solid traverse line. Ideally, guests will have some ski touring or splitboarding experience, but if not, as a gauge of your physical ability, you should be fit enough to hike 10 km (6 miles) with a 10 kg (22 lb) pack. We’ll use ski lifts to gain elevation, then ski tour and splitboard to explore the backcountry with daily touring of 500–1,000 meters (1,600–3,300 feet) spread over multiple short climbs. Some days offer the option to return to the resort early to ski on your own at a more relaxed pace. With the exception of a few resort laps from time to time, we do not expect to ski at the resort unless weather delays our ability to leave the boundaries each morning. If you are unsure if this is a good fit, please contact us before booking. More on ability levels

FAQs:

  • When is the best time to come for the best conditions? January and February offer the most consistent snowfall and deepest powder conditions across Aomori and Tohoku, with frequent storms and cold temperatures creating ideal “Japow” conditions.
  • Is there Wi-Fi at the hotels? Yes, all accommodations offer Wi-Fi so you can stay connected throughout the trip.
  • Where are the other guests from and what is their backcountry experience? Guests join us from around the world, primarily North America and Europe. Expect a mix of  advanced skiers and riders who are comfortable in powder, trees, and variable terrain, and prepared for ski touring and splitboarding as outlined in the “Is This Trip For Me” section.
  • How much spending money should I bring? While most major expenses are covered, we recommend budgeting approximately ¥3,000–¥5,000 per day for lunches, snacks, and après-ski. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carrying some cash is helpful for smaller, local establishments.
  • Do I need to bring my own avalanche safety equipment and touring skis/splitboard? Yes. Guests are required to bring their own gear, including avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe with suitable backpack). Our guides will provide a safety review at the start of the trip to ensure everyone is comfortable using their equipment.
Arriving to Aomori:
  • Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori Station. There are also direct domestic flight from Tokyo's Haneda airport to Aomori but this airport can close due to weather. The train is more reliable. Should you prefer to fly, we suggest arriving a day or two earlier to prevent any delays meeting the group on Day 1.
Departing:
  • Bullet train from Morioka Station to Tokyo or to your departing Tokyo airport.
  • To get to Narita Airport you take the bullet train from Morioka to Tokyo Station and then connect on the JR Narita Express Train to the airport.
  • To get to Haneda Airport once you arrive to Tokyo Station you take a short train connection to Hamamatsucho Station. From there, you take the Tokyo Monorail to the Haneda Airport.
Shipping your bags:
  • If you plan on spending time in Tokyo or elsewhere at the end of your PowderQuest trip,  it can be very convenient to ship your skis/snowboard from Morioka directly to the airport. Delivery time is usually 48 hours and can be done from our hotel or the Morioka Station. Your guides can assist you.
To help you prepare, as we get closer to the trip, we will send you additional useful logistics for Japan: SIM card rental tips, cultural etiquette and additional useful tips to save you time and money.
