Step into the raw, untamed mountains of Georgia’s Caucasus on an immersive backcountry journey designed for experienced skiers and riders seeking something truly different. PowderQuest’s Svaneti program combines full-day ski touring with a deep connection to one of the most culturally rich and visually dramatic alpine regions on earth. From the high glaciated terrain of Tetnuldi to the perfectly spaced tree skiing around Hatsvali and into remote, seldom-visited valleys, each day delivers big mountain descents, varied terrain, and a true sense of exploration. This is our most demanding itinerary, featuring consecutive full touring days, significant vertical gain, and a strong emphasis on efficient movement in the mountains. It’s best suited for seasoned backcountry skiers who are comfortable earning their turns and ready for a physically and technically rewarding experience. With two IFMGA guides — including a local expert based in Mestia — the experience goes far beyond backcountry skiing. Evenings are spent immersed in Georgia`s traditional Svan culture, with home-style meals, local wine, and the warm, authentic hospitality that defines this remote mountain region.

Is This Trip For Me?

powderquest

You should be in very fit and confident skiing steep and varied terrain and snow conditions, including powder and hard pack. Participants must ski ungroomed black diamond runs without hesitation and have strong ski touring or splitboarding experience, including efficient transitions, skinning steep terrain, and executing kick turns. You should be comfortable climbing 1500 meters (5000 feet) per day at high altitude. Snowboarders should maintain speed on flats, hold a solid traverse line, and maneuver smoothly to keep the group moving, sometimes using ski poles for assistance.

This adventure is best suited for travelers who embrace the unknown and enjoy stepping far outside the typical ski-trip comfort zone. Georgia — especially Svaneti — is raw, remote, and wonderfully unpolished. It’s more foreign culturally than what you may have experienced with us in South America, and things can feel noticeably less organized. That’s part of the charm, but it also means flexibility and a good sense of humor go a long way.

Lodging is very comfortable in Mestia and a bit more rustic for our one night stay at a cozy guest house in Ushguli. The travel days, village life, and pace of the region make this a true mountain expedition rather than a polished resort vacation. In exchange, you’ll be rewarded with exceptionally friendly local people, fascinating history, delicious food, and a sense of discovery that’s increasingly rare in the ski world.

If you’re excited by big mountains, rich culture, and the spirit of real adventure, this trip will feel unforgettable.
