July 14, 2015- As you probably have heard by now after being blasted by posts and images of on your social media pages, the Central Andes ski resorts of Chile and Argentina were hammered with upwards of 4-9 feet of snow over the weekend and all the major resorts are opening. But what about further south in Patagonia, Argentina and Southern Chile? Here is a Patagonia snow report of current conditions, weather, and what to expect this 3rd week of July.
Nevados de Chillan
New snow over the weekend: 35 inches at the top, 17 inches near Hotel Nevados. Home to many of our trips, including the Ingrid Backstrom Camp Nevados is open with 100% of the lifts and terrain functioning weather permitting of course as two more pulses of snow are expected this week; Wednesday and Friday with a window of sunny weather on Thursday. We currently have a tour there right now. Here are some shots from our group skiing yesterday.
Lesser know Corralco, further south from Chillan near Temuco has been open for over a month now and they have probably seen the best conditions of all Chile’s ski destinations. They have a base of close to 2 meters and they seem to get refreshes every couple of days. Another 15 inches fell on Monday, July 13. Corralco is slowing becoming discovered as a great backcountry touring zone and home to a large sled operation.
Chapelco in San Martin, Argentina
We have been guiding here since 1998 and it rarely let’s us down. Similar to Corralco, Chapelco has also been seeing quite a bit of consistent snow over June and July with the exception of a short warm dry spell a few weeks back. Snow is forecast all this week starting this evening.
Cerro Catedral and Bariloche
We can’t exclude the big kid. Patagonia’s largest ski area is always in the news, this year mainly due to a pre-season mudslide that flooded part of the base and partially covered one of the lower lifts. The clean up is done, the snow is here, and Catedral is open with snow from the top all the way down into downtown Bariloche. It’s a cold snowy week ahead for Bariloche and surrounding resorts. Several feet of snow could fall in Catedral by Friday.
Our new favorite destination in Patagonia, we have added Baguales to all of our guided off-piste adventures in Argentina with 2 full days of cat skiing and an overnight in their beautiful backcountry lodge. They too will be seeing more snow and cold temperatures this week.
