When does the South America ski season start? The social media rumors have been flying since late last week after a 2 foot snow storm (see the photos) covered central Chile. El Colorado ski resort would soon fire up their chairlifts for the 2017 ski season in South America. Today the official announcement came from general manager Peter Leatherbee. El Colorado will be South America’s first resort to open this season. Opening day has been set for this Friday, May 19, 2017.
A new storm is forecasted to arrive tonight bringing upwards of 20 plus inches if the forecast holds. El Colorado plans to operate with 80% of their terrain and lifts if weather cooperates. Currently the weather report is showing clearing skies and should be a full powder day in the Andes.
Check back to the PowderQuest blog for updates and additional resort openings. Thinking about heading to Chile this summer to chase the powder? It’s not too late to make plans. Here’s a good trip to check out (and yes it visits El Colorado).
